    Indian Stock Market Trading Time & Sessions: Pre-Opening To Closing

    In India, there are two main stock exchanges, the national stock exchange (NSE) and the Bombay stock exchange (BSE), both follow a uniform trading schedule. The Indian stock market offers multiple trading sessions designed for a different types of trading activities. These sessions range from the pre-opening sessions to the closing sessions, and each session serves a specific purpose than can influence price movement. By understanding and effectively utilizing these market timings, traders and investors can optimize their decision and navigate the market more efficiently.

    Stock market trading session are categorized as

    1) Pre-opening session

    The pre-opening session is the initial phase of the trading day and mainly focus on price discovery before the regular market session begins. Focuses on price discovery before the regular market session begins. This session lasts for 15 minutes (9am to 9.15am) and is divided into three distinct phases:-

    Order entry session (9:00am – 9:08am)

    During this period, traders can place, modify, or cancel orders. However, no actual trades are executed at this stage.

    Order matching session (9:08am-9:12am)

    In this phase, the stock exchange matches buy and sell orders and determines the opening price based on demand & supply.

    Buffer period (9:12am-9:15am)

    This is a transition period during which no order placement or modification is allowed. It ensures a smooth shift to the regular trading session.

    2) Regular trading session

    The regular trading session in the Indian stock market operates from 9.15 am to 3.30 pm. During this period, actual buying and selling of stocks take place on the stock exchanges. The total duration of the regular trading session is 6hrs and 15min.

    3) Post closing session

    The post closing session is conducted from 3.30 pm to 3.40 pm, during which the final closing price of stocks is determined based on the weighted average price of trades executed in the closing period. This closing price is used for valuation, settlement, and index calculation purposes.

    Note:- The pre-open session allows order collection and price discovery, while actual trading begins at 9:15 am after a brief buffer period. These timings are applicable to both the equity derivatives segments on Indian stock exchanges.

    Note:- The currency derivatives segment of the Indian stock market operates from monday to friday, excluding exchange declared holidays.

    Market timing according to the commodity segment:–

    In India, commodity trading is primarily conducted through two major exchanges: The multi commodity exchange (MCX) and The national commodity & derivatives exchange (NCDEX). Compared to the stock market, the commodity segment offers more flexible and extended trading hours. This flexibility allows traders to participate in the market during evening and late night sessions, making commodity trading especially suitable for individuals who work regular 9 to 5 jobs but are still interested in active trading.
